SOUL FOODS...
Sounds heavenly! but, what does that mean?
S - Seasonal
O - Organic
U - Unrefined
L - Local
Seasonal foods are the best for us in terms of what our bodies require at a particular time of year. There is a reason why some crops grow or are harvested in cold weather and others in warmer weather. Chemically, these foods will carry the right nutrients in the most effective proportion for our bodies to perform at their peak capacity, depending on the season.
Organic foods, free of chemical pesticides and herbicides, provide higher quality of nutrients, less toxic load and are considered to be gentle to the earth and the farmers.
Unrefined foods, or whole foods, are those which have not been processed. Maintaining the integrity of their nutrients, these foods provide vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, enzymes, energy and nourishment necessary for optimal body function, growth and regenaration.
Local foods, as the word says, are those which can be naturally found in our area. Our bodies, as part of nature, will resonate more with those foods grown in our neighborhood, which have been sharing the same air, temperature, soil, water and energy particular of our sorroundings. As much as we'd like it to be different, there is a reason why nature hasn't brought bananas or coconuts to Marin County!
